This is a recipe for a lip scrub using just two ingredients, coffee grounds and honey. the full recipe is available here.
Wearing lipstick is one of my favourite pastimes. Unfortunately,
lipstick doesn’t look half as nice on lips that are peeling or rough. So I
decided to try this homemade coffee lip scrub from the indianspot; because
well, if you’re gonna be using something on your lips it should taste good and
preferably not have too many chemicals in it.
The Ingredients
Honey – Honey is packed with vitamins and minerals that are extremely beneficial to your skin, especially in areas like the lips where the skin is delicate and more prone to dryness and peeling. Honey is rich in anti-oxidants which also have anti-microbial properties. This makes the lips less prone to discoloration as it protects them from the UV rays of the sun and helps the skin to rejuvenate. Honey is also known to absorb and retain moisture, making the lips soft, hydrated and supple.
Coffee Grounds – The coffee grounds act as a gentle exfoliator, since they are rough enough to slough off dead skin, whilst still being soft enough not to damage the delicate skin of the lips. The coffee is also a powerful anti-oxidant and can help reverse UV damage as well as fight free radicals. It also acts to tighten the skin and give it a more youthful appearance. This is great for the lips because the lessening of the lines on the lips the better your lipstick will look and the less prone it will be to bleeding colour around the lips.
Trying the Recipe
Lets get right to the fun part; the trial.

This is what my lips looked like before I tried the scrub. |
I decided to use the grounds from our morning's pot of coffee, and used the recommended quantities of both honey and coffee as they are in the recipe.

I found the consistency a little runny, so I added a bit more of the coffee grounds.

I took the scrub on the tip of my index finger, making sure to get plenty of grounds when I did so and rubbed my lips in a circular motion for about 30 seconds. I think I may have used a little too much pressure, because it has left my lips a little tingly, although I don’t have any serious objection to that.

Evidently the scrub worked well, and has the added bonus of
tasting good too (especially if you love coffee). looking at the before and after images side by side, you can see a visible
reduction in the lines on the lips as well as a lightening of the colour of the
lips and the dry peeling skin is gone too.
Conclusions
Pros
- Uses easily available ingredients, and allows you to up-cycle used coffee grounds
- Easy to make and doesn’t require extensive preparation time.
- Tastes good
- Works well, exfoliates the lips efficiently
- Conditions the lips and leaves them feeling moist and supple
Cons
- The quantities are a little excessive unless you want to store some in the fridge (I didn’t do that I threw out the remaining scrub)
- Can be a little runny, but not enough to become messy
My Recommendation
- Use this lip scrub as and when needed but reduce the quantities, so just a couple of drops of honey on a little coffee grounds. It’s easy to reduce the quantities as you just need equal parts of the coffee grounds and the honey.
- I would not use a lip scrub every day, because too much exfoliation is as bad as too little. The ideal usage would be three to four times a week.
- Be gentle when scrubbing your lips, make sure that your finger is not exerting too much pressure.
- Always exfoliate your lips in a circular motion to avoid making them overly lined.
- Finish by using your favourite lip balm, to keep your lips moist and soft and lock in the benefits of the honey.
